Unlike previous installments, weapons in Fallout 4 fall under three classifications: normal, legendary, and unique. Normal weapons have no special statistics on them whatsoever. Legendary weapons come with random bonuses applied to them, and are only dropped by legendary enemies. Unique weapons are weapons that are already named and will always retain the same special bonus. Uniques are typically either bought from merchants or are quest rewards. Normal and legendary weapons will change their name when mods are applied, unique weapons will not.

All these weapons count as non automatic weapons and thus work with either Gunslinger, Rifleman, or Sniper respectively, except the Cryolator, which is counted as a heavy gun and thus works with Heavy Gunner.
Radiation weaponsEdit
These weapons produce radiation damage, including both direct damage from explosions and damage over time from exposure and poisoning. There is some variance in how damage is dealt within this class of weapon; please consult each weapon's page for specific details. Also, the radiation page explains the unique ways that this kind of damage is handled by the game. These are affected by the perk Nuclear Physicist in terms of radiation damage.

ExplosivesEdit
Explosives have a maximum range of 93. They seem to hit an invisible wall at their maximum range. Explosives benefit from the Bloody Mess, Demolition Expert and SCAV! - Cautionary Crafts perks, but only for their 'primary' damage effects (which always includes the Explosive legendary prefix); this is why the Pulse grenade and Pulse mine are not affected by any of the 3.

Melee weaponsEdit
Damage found in the table is base damage, every point of Strength adds 10% to it. Several perks can further increase the damage displayed for a melee weapon.
BladedEdit
Bladed weapons can dismember limbs of humanoid opponents, permanently damaging the limb and disarming the target. Like all melee weapons, bladed weapons benefit from Big Leagues and Strength.
BluntEdit
Blunt weapons tend to stagger opponents more frequently than bladed weapons. Like all melee weapons, blunt weapons benefit from Big Leagues and Strength.
Fist weaponsEdit
Fist weapons benefit from the Iron Fist perk as well as from Strength. Note that fist weapons cannot be used while wearing power armor.
Renaming weaponsEdit
In Fallout 4, the player character is able to rename any weapon, including unique weapons, at any weapons workbench. However, the silver submachine gun, the Survivor's Special, Ashmaker and Grognak's axe cannot be renamed, nor will they pick up any prefixes from modding them such as hardened or punishing, etc. Renaming weapons does not affect any weapon stats. This primarily adds a level of personalization to weapons and can help avoid accidentally disassembling a favored weapon.

Weapons may be modified in Fallout 4. Each weapon has modification 'slots' (e.g. barrel, grip, magazine, sights) that may be modified with increasingly powerful or useful mods by the player character based on their perks. However, the player character may salvage useful mods that are not yet available via the player character's perk level by simply modifying any weapon that already has the mod of interest.[5] By replacing the mod of interest with any available mod the original mod goes into inventory and may then be used to alter the player character's chosen weapon without regard for their perk level. Unique weapons do not offer this capability; their special mods are 'reserved' and since they are unique, no other examples are available to be salvaged.

If a player character puts unique and legendary weapons in a container in a settlement, nearby NPCs, like settlers or even enemy attackers, can randomly take them and they may be irretrievable. Therefore, access to personal containers should be restricted, either by obstructing the expected path used by them to reach the container, or by the use of powered doors, holes, floating structures, etc.

Crafting in Fallout 4 is useful, but it can also be downright confusing. These Fallout crafting tips will help you build better Settlements, gather more Resources, and craft the best communities you can.
Here are a few helpful Crafting pointers:
Understanding The Local Leader Perk[edit]
Local leader can open up a world of new materials, but only if you understand how it works. Confused about the obtuse Local Leader perk and the strange process of establishing supply routes? Once you have the required perk and at least two decent settlements, enter Workshop mode and find a settler you will assign to handle the supply line. Highlight that person and select the Supply Line option to send them on their way.
This will allow you to share resources between the two settlements. The resources won't appear intuitively in Workshop mode, but they'll be available in Build Mode. If you get to the second level of Local Leader, you'll be able to start opening up trade stores.
You Can Craft Artillery and Call in Strikes[edit]
Help the Minutemen capture the Castle in Taking Independence and Ronnie Shaw will lead you to the Artillery Schematic. This will allow you to Craft Artillery at your settlements, and you'll begin finding Smoke Grenades near your Crafting Stations.
The short and skinny on how to get this benefit is to follow the Minutemen quest lines until The Castle is in your hands, then check back in with Preston, meet Ronnie, and search the storage inside. Laying these grenades in firefights near your cannon-equipped settlements will call in artillery strikes, salvos of high explosives that land on the smoke and destroy whatever is inside.
Power Up[edit]
A lot of structures won't function to their fullest capacity without the benefit of electricity. You'll need power to fuel your creations. Check out IGN's detailed guide to rigging your settlements with all the electricity you'll ever need.
You Can Still Use the Mods You Can't Build[edit]
Find a modded weapon with a feature beyond your ability to craft? You can still remove the prefabricated mod from the weapon (replacing it with a lower-tech design of your own) and apply it to another weapon in your arsenal.
Mods Aren't Lost [edit]
When you replace one Mod with another on a weapon, the old Mod isn't lost. It's still in your inventory, and you can feel free to attach it to another weapon.
You Can Cheat to Build Better Stuff[edit]
Beyond the obvious PC Console Command Cheats, you can also manipulate some things on PS4 and Xbox One to turn crafting in your favor.
Using the You're Special duplication cheat, you can boost your Intelligence and make room gain access to useful crafting Perks like Scrapper and Science!
Note that on PC, using the godmode command TGM will also give you unlimited resources.
You Can Find Crafting Components in the Strangest Places[edit]
If you're really serious about Crafting, you know that some materials can be an absolute pain to gather. But did you know that some of the stuff you're looking for isn't necessarily hidden in Lockers and Chests? Nuclear Material, for example, is often found hidden in the bodies of Radroaches.
You Can Grow All the Adhesive You Need[edit]
If you're into weapons modding, you know the pain of the near-endless quest for Adhesive. Farming can help alleviate that agony. A regular rotation of Muttfruit, Corn, and Tatos combine to create plenty of Vegetable Starch, source of plenty of naturally-sticky substances. If you build a Settlement, keep these crops in your rotation to keep your weapons in good repair.
Break Down Weapons The Smart Way[edit]
We've mentioned this tip in another part of the guide but it's so helpful and appropriate we're also including it here. When scrapping weapons, don't do it through the ordinary menu. Instead, drop them on the ground in one of your Settlements and then scrap them from Workshop Mode (or build mode) to assure you harvest every last component.
